Get your mind right. Embrace the suck. That’s what the GORUCK guys like to tell you.
It sounds casual, even flippant; but, it really gets at something much deeper…….it’s about how we handle the challenges that life gives us. When confronted with something out of our control, what do we do…..do we panic? quit? Or, do we dig in and focus on the things that really matter?
If you’re up for getting your mind right, I highly recommend reading this lecture given by Admiral James Stockdale.
Stockdale was a Naval aviator during the Vietnam War, and he was imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton for seven years after his plane was shot down.
Despite suffering regular beatings and torture, along with long periods of solitary confinement, Stockdale remained focused on the things he could control; namely, his role as the senior American officer in the prison and his role as the leader of those men.
The Vietnamese broke James Stockdale’s body; but, they never destroyed his will because his mind was right; he was focused on what mattered most and was able to leave that prison as a man proud of the role he had played over those 7 years.
And, while you’re reading Stockdale’s tale, remind yourself of another GORUCK adage……..it could always be worse.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishment the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
